The Basics

Aquaponics & hydroponics, explained

What is aquaponics, and how is it different from hydroponics?

Aquaponics is a closed-loop way of growing food that combines fish farming (aquaculture) with soil-less plant growing (hydroponics). Fish produce waste, naturally occurring bacteria and worms convert that waste into nutrients, and the plants absorb those nutrients while filtering and cleaning the water — which is then pumped back to the fish. Hydroponics on its own still relies on man-made liquid nutrient solutions; aquaponics replaces those bottled chemicals with a living ecosystem, so nothing goes to waste. See the plain-English breakdown on our home page ↑.

Do you teach hydroponics as well as aquaponics?

Yes. While our farms run on aquaponics, our enrichment courses and farm experiences also cover hydroponics — the soil-less, water-based growing method — including simple passive setups like the Kratky method that are perfect for learning at home. It's a great way to understand both approaches side by side and decide which suits your space.
